Pilots seeking to obtain the FAA Certified Flight Instructors (CFI) license
must hold at least an FAA Commercial Pilot license with Instrument Rating
and current FAA medical certificate. There is no minimum training time required
by the regulations but we recommend the course covers at least 12 hours
of flight instruction and 40 hours of ground instruction. Four to five weeks
full time study should be sufficient to complete the course.
Great emphasis is placed on a thorough understanding of your subject matter
and the ability to prepare and present effective lessons on the ground and
in the air. A major proportion of the ground instruction will be role play,
the student acting as instructor and asked to present a variety of lessons
from theoretical subjects such as aerodynamics to practical lessons in stalls
or slow flight. The flight training itself will be conducted from the right
seat of the aircraft, initially to gain competence in aircraft control then
advancing to role-play. The FAA requires CFI applicants (airplane only)
to have received instruction in spin entry, spins and spin recovery. Applicants
will also be required to demonstrate competence in handling and teaching
on a complex aircraft.
The test itself is divided into two parts. The oral examination begins the
test and lasts for approximately 3 hours in which, among other things, you
will be required to prepare and present a lesson plan on a subject chosen
by the examiner. Satisfactory completion of the oral section then leads
to the flight test.
