Pilots seeking to obtain the FAA Certified Flight Instructor Instrument (CFII) license must hold at least an FAA Commercial Pilot license with Instrument Rating plus CFI and current FAA medical certificate. There is no minimum training time required by the regulations but we recommend the course covers at least 5 hours of flight instruction and 10 hours of ground instruction. Seven to ten days of full time study should be sufficient to complete the course. As with the CFI license, great emphasis is placed on a thorough understanding of your subject matter and the ability to prepare and present effective lessons on the ground and in the air. The syllabus for the CFII will follow the same pattern as that used for the CFI, with the majority of training focused on ground instruction. The test itself is divided into two parts. The oral examination begins the test and lasts for approximately 1 - 2 hours in which, among other things, you will be required to prepare and present a lesson plan on a subject chosen by the examiner. Satisfactory completion of the oral section then leads to the flight test and you will be required to fly an approach from the right seat and to critique the examiner when he or she fly's the aircraft as a student instrument pilot.
